Daily Boom 80's Throwback: The Bangles- 'Manic Monday'

I tend to go out of my way to choose songs that aren't in heavy rotation on every 80's radio station across the U.S. just to keep things fresh, but this time I'm going to do something out of character. I'm going to choose The Bangles "Manic Monday" on a Monday morning as the 80's throwback of the day. Why? Maybe it's because I listened to their album (yes, as in vinyl) over the weekend and was reminded of just how truly great they were.
Maybe it's because I like to be unpredictable and by doing something obvious, well that is unpredictable for me. Or maybe it's simply because "Manic Monday" is a really good song that so many of us relate to on this very morning, so enjoy it!

Make This: Peep Martini
-1.5 ounces Pinnacle Peach Vodka
-2.5 ounces margarita mix
-½ ounce blue curacao
-¼ ounce mint simple syrup
-Blue Peeps Marshmallow garnish
Directions Fill a martini shaker with ice. Add the vodka, Margarita mix, blue curacao and mint simple syrup to the ice, then shake for several seconds to mix. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a blue Peeps.

- 1 container Betty crocker chocolate frosting, Rich & Creamy
- 1 can Betty crocker decorating cake icing, green
- 1 can Betty crocker decorating cake icing, orange
- 1 box Betty crocker supermoist devil's food cake mix
Snacks
- 1 cup Chocolate cookie crumbs
Desserts
- 8 Peeps marshmallow bunnies
Liquids
- 1 Water
This festive bunny garden cake is quick and easy to make, with only 20 minutes of hands-on prep time and some simple ingredients. Let the kids help decorate with frosting and PEEPS marshmallow bunnies; the cake is sure to be an adorable Easter showstopper.

I'm not sure if time is flying by or moving incredibly slow but I do know that 32 years ago today The Breakfast Club rolled into theaters and we all spent two hours in detention with them, by choice. Check out the full movie soundtrack below!

It's strange how I can hear a song and easily remember the time of year that it first became popular. The summer of 1987 was loaded with great music and there was one little song that seemed to follow me everywhere that I went. The System's "Don't Disturb This Groove" eventually became know as the official song of that summer but that was after it followed me to the Jersey Shore, to Six Flags and it played in the background no matter what store I shopped in at the time. I affiliate "Don't Disturb This Groove" with car windows rolled down and sunshine. And maybe a bit of Sun In and my big boom box as well.
I love when songs are kind of timeless in that you really can't tell by listening what era that are from. This is one of those so check it out below!

Chaka Khan Celebrates 63rd Birthday Today
It seems like just yesterday that Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You" was being played every four hours on the radio and her video was popping up in heavy rotation on MTV. In actuality it's 30+ years later and one of the most formidable voices in soul is celebrating her 63rd birthday today. 90's Nostalgia: A Tribe Called Quest - 'Scenario'
Sad news about the unexpected death of Phife Dawg this morning. The 45-year-old was a founding member of A Tribe Called Quest, one of the most legendary and iconic rap groups of all time. "Scenario" is off the crews 1992 release The Low End Theory and it's one of my very favorites. Check out the video below.

Malik Taylor, the rapper known as Phife Dawg whose nimble, clever rhymes helped launch A Tribe Called Quest to both commercial and critical success, died Wednesday at the age of 45. Rolling Stone has confirmed the rapper's death, though an official statement has yet to be released.
While the cause of death has yet to be announced, Taylor had had health issues for years, undergoing a kidney transplant in 2008 to deal with a longtime battle with Type 1 diabetes.

Remember when you'd walk into the mall record (yes record) store and it looked like this?
Boom Daily Throwback: Winger- 'Headed for a Heartbreak'

Ahhh Kip Winger. Just stare at the photo for a minute because doing that will likely drag you back in time. I stumbled onto this interview with the rocker in a (GASP) 25-year-old issue of Sassy magazine and was kind of sucked in. I was 17 when he and his band, Winger, first broke through and even then he struck me as smarter than the average bear. I'm not sure what drives this interview more, his intelligence or the reporter's love for him. I think you had to be there to be sure.But he is smart and back then he had a clear direction of what the bands' second album would be. It was pieced together in a pretty painstaking way, which I appreciate. I've loved their catalog of music over the years, but Winger's self-titled debut remains my favorite. It was one of those albums that I played almost all the way through and it followed me everywhere. It was in my Walkman, in my stereo, playing on the bus to school and then one of the things that we listened to at the end of the night at work.
Winger was everywhere. And Kip was hot. He also had the hair that every teen girl was striving for. I worked a few hours a week at a salon and nearly every girl came in carrying a picture of Kip because THAT was the dye job or kind of curl they wanted. He was hot and his hair was legendary.
That first album though, is spawned four singles and spent well over a year on Billboard's Hot 200 album chart. It also recently was named one of Rolling Stone's Top 50 metal albums of all time, kind of proving that this band still stands out from the mountain of hair bands that came and went over the years.
Winger has released several albums over the years and they are still together and touring as I type. I could have chosen several videos to feature but I need to take you guys back to "Headed for a Heartbreak" but done with the Colorado Symphony. It's still gorgeous, don't you think?

When I say the name Sheena Easton a lot of you will probably connect her one of those big 80's ballads ("For Your Eyes Only" anyone?) that she sang. She spent the first five years of her career being packaged as the proverbial good girl- and then Sheena hooked up with Prince and her image went through a huge overhaul. "Sugar Walls" showed us all a completely different side of her, one most certainly motivated by her work with Prince. By 1988 the songstress had signed with a new label and was embarking on a more soulful, R&B path.
"The Lover In Me" made it to number two on Billboard's Hot 100 but not without some mixed reviews. For every music critic that insisted that this was Sheena's best work to date there was another just waiting for a chance to pan it. Check out the video below. Did you prefer her work later on in the 80's when her image had been vamped up, or did you prefer the sweeter Sheena who sang "Morning Train"?

Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Rod Stewart 'Crazy About Her'
Last night I was cleaning up and I had a DVR'ed episode of Totally 80's videos on and was reminded of an old Rod Stewart song. He had a LOT of stuff out in the 80's and some songs seem to have stuck in my head better than others. Stewart's Out of Order album back in 1988 introduced us to a string of hits like "Lost In You", "Forever Young" and "My Heart Can't Tell Me No" but I had completely forgotten about another track- "Crazy About Her".
It was actually the fourth single off of the album and reached number 11 on Billboard's charts back in 1989. It actually probably ranks as one of my very favorite Stewart songs. Check out the video below. Do you guys remember this one?

Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Whitney Houston - 'How Will I Know'
I think we're all pretty familiar with Whitney Houston's self-titled debut album, right? But what you may not realize is just how long it was simmering on Billboard's Hot 200 album chart before finally getting to number one on this week back in 1986. In fact, it wasn't until its sixth single "How Will I Know" was released in the fall of 1985 that the album started to pick up momentum. Ballads like "Saving All My Love for You" were popular but it was this upbeat song with its bright video that made everyone fall in love with Whitney. Check out the video below!

Currently Booming: Exclusive Chat with Ann Curless of Expose`
At exactly this time last year I was graced with the opportunity to interview Ann Curless of Expose`. She was more than happy to dish on her life now and what it's like to continue performing with one of Billboard's top ten girl groups of all time, 30 years after they first rose to fame. It's worth revisiting.
So many great girl groups have come and gone over the years, but long before Fifth Harmony, Destiny's Child and even En Vogue took their turn as Billboard's hottest acts, there was Exposé. While Gioia Bruno, Ann Curless and Jeanette Jurado may have been first put together by a producer way back in 1985, they cemented their place in the record books pretty quickly. Their debut album Exposure first dropped in 1987, and they became the very first group in history to have four top ten singles from a debut effort, beating out legendary acts like The Supremes and even The Beatles. Exposé also became the first girl group in history to have seven back-to-back top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
