Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Bad English- 'Forget Me Not'

Those lyrics are a little stalker-ish, aren't they? John Waite has always been a favorite of mine when I think back to 1980-something. I instantly connect him with his ballady "Missing You" and while I know that he was the lead vocalist for Bad English in 1989, I completely forgot about this song ."Forget Me Not" was a huge hit on the modern rock charts, in spite of not cracking the top 40 on Billboard's Hot 100.
I happened to catch this video this weekend on VH1 Classic's Totally 80's and was sucked in by the guitar work. I remember when Bad English first arrived on the scene I had a hard time taking John Waite seriously with all of that hair but the songs, boy did they click. As of right now, they still do.

Daily Boom 80's Throwback: The System- 'Don't Disturb This Groove'

It's strange how I can hear a song and easily remember the time of year that it first became popular. The summer of 1987 was loaded with great music and there was one little song that seemed to follow me everywhere that I went. The System's "Don't Disturb This Groove" eventually became know as the official song of that summer but that was after it followed me to the Jersey Shore, to Six Flags and it played in the background no matter what store I shopped in at the time. I affiliate "Don't Disturb This Groove" with car windows rolled down and sunshine. And maybe a bit of Sun In and my big boom box as well.
I love when songs are kind of timeless in that you really can't tell by listening what era that are from. This is one of those so check it out below!

Daily Boom 90's Nostalgia: DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - 'Summertime'

Here's a song that needs little introduction and it seems pretty perfect for the first official full weekend of summer. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince's "Summertime" became an instant dance hit when it was released in May of 1991. Just like the lyrics say, it really was a break from the norm. "Summertime" came at a time when house music had truly invaded the clubs and if it wasn't your cup of tea then you were probably riding the Latin freestyle wave. Either way, this smooth groove was a welcome departure.
As a Philly kid, I loved that the video really did give a shout out to the places where we all hung out. It was a realistic ode to summer, complete with lawn chairs and Capri Sun. The industry appreciated "Summertime" just as much as the kids that grooved to it. In 1992, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won a Grammy for this song!
25 years later this song feels pretty timeless. You just feel like it really is summer time while listening to it, don't you?

Saturday a' la 'American Bandstand'
If you grew up in the 80's then Saturday's meant 2 things: no school and American Bandstand. The dance show staple, hosted by the legendary Dick Clark, featured teenagers from all over the place dancing to their favorite songs. Each week one musical guest would lip sync their current hit and while Bandstand was a stop that every artist wanted to make, it really was about those kids that seemed like they could be your next door neighbor. It was about their fashion, their moves and who was dating who. Those details were what actually kept teens from one side of the country to the other watching every week.
A bunch of kids dancing to some great music. That really was the key to Bandstand's success. If only it were still that simple!

Currently Booming: Will Columbia House Relaunch Vinyl Service in 2016?

Great news for all of you vinyl lovers out there- 2016 means another vinyl subscription service and it's an old familiar name. Columbia House was a powerhouse music service through out the 80's and 90's and it's back to serve up music again next year. Believe it or not, the company actually only filed for bankruptcy just a few short months ago (who knew it was even still around!) and after being bought out, Columbia House is ready to relaunch itself.
Obviously, digital options lead the way and streaming is usually the way to go because in this day and age none of us like having to wait to hear a particular song. But vinyl really has enjoyed a nifty revival and if you're like me then you've been reminded of just how wonderful those albums really are. Have you started to collect records and if so, do you see yourself circling back to Columbia House?

Every time I get in the car, without fail, a Hall & Oates song comes on the radio. I think nearly everyone knows who they are and probably likes at least one song by the duo. It's kind of hard not to, right? Way back in 1984, "Out of Touch" graced the top of Billboard's charts for a two-week run at number one. When you hear this song now, more than 30 years later it doesn't sound the least bit dated which is probably part of the reason why Hall & Oates still gets a ton of airplay in spite of not having any new music out.

Do you remember Pebbles (AKA Perri Reid, the ex-wife of LA Reid)? She is currently an Atlanta-based minister, "Sister Perri" and before that she sizzled in the music industry for putting together a little girl-group known as TLC. Yeah, that chick. Before all of those things she had her own recording career back in the late 80's to the early 90's and her work was all over the charts. In the fall of 1987, Pebbles "Girlfriend" was pretty much my anthem. I was 16, in 11th grade and just about every friend that I had was dealing with a cheating boyfriend. "Girlfriend" was basically early Sister Perri preaching at us all to move on and find a better dude.
Apparently my friends and I weren't the only ones that appreciated Pebbles insight because "Girlfriend" made it to #5 on Billboard's Hot 100 and did really well on the dance charts, as well as in the UK. I actually can remember listening to Open House Party with my tape recorder ready so that I could grab this song, hopefully without too much interruption by John Garabedian. You guys know what I'm talking about, right? How you would wait all day for a song only to have a DJ talk into the beginning & cut off the ending?
Anyway, I watched the "Girlfriend" video again this morning for the first time in forever and it still resonates. I can see Sister Perri in the making here. I also do remember a second video that got a lot of play on MTV. It was the dance remix that featured more of The Deele (LA Reid and Babyface's group from back in the day before they were worth a mint) rapping in the background.

Songs such as "Open Your Heart", "Live to Tell" and "True Blue" sky rocketed up the charts and "Papa Don't Preach" tackled the still somewhat taboo topic of teen pregnancy. True Blue had something for everyone it seemed with each track being radically different from the one before it and the videos were equally impeccable. You guys remember Animotion, right? They had that hit song called "Obsession" that will now probably be stuck in your head for the rest of the day simply because I mentioned it. Well, back in 1989 they also had another hit, "Room To Move" which featured Cynthia Rhodes (ex-wife of Richard Marx) and Paul Engemann on lead vocals. It was featured in the 1988 science-fiction comedy film, My Stepmother Is an Alien and reached number 9 on Billboard's Hot 100.
Believe it or not the lineup on "Room To Move" is almost entirely different from the group that first broke through back in 1984. The original band, led by Astrid Plane and Bill Wadhams, has reunited
in recent years and continues to perform. The lineup that featured Rhodes and Engemann was short lived but they did produce a great song so check it out below!

Currently Booming: 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' Is 30 Today!
2016 is proving to be the year when a lot of 80's cult classic films are celebrating their 30th anniversary, isn't it? In a few weeks it'll be Ferris Bueller's Day Off's turn to celebrate the milestone. You guys remember this movie don't you? From the moment that Matthew Broderick delivered that opening monologue I think that most of us figured that he would be sticking around for awhile- and we were right.
Broderick is beginning to do some press in connection with this milestone and after many years of remaining tight-lipped he is now admitting that he did indeed date costar Jennifer Grey. Have you ever gotten the feeling while watching this that something was brewing between them? I'll admit I never caught on!

"Find Another Fool" by Quarterflash almost feels like a lost hit to me. When everyone thinks of Quarterflash I think "Harden My Heart" instantly comes to mind, right? I happened to catch the video for "Find Another Fool" the other day and remembered that THIS is the song by them that I loved most.
Rindy Ross' vocals and then sax playing are just everything and this band was pretty rock solid. Quarterflash first formed in Portland back in 1980 and within a year or so they hit it big. This live video performance was filmed in 1981 after they were already playing to huge audiences. Am I the only one that misses the saxophone making a regular appearance in currently trending music?

Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Kiss - 'Hide Your Heart'

One of the ways to almost ensure a hair band hit back in 1980-something was to create a love triangle that played out in under 5 minutes. The story of Tommy, Rosa and Tito laid the groundwork for "Hide Your Heart" by KISS back in 1989. The history behind this song is kind of interesting because after Paul Stanley first wrote the song it was actually rejected for the band's 1987 album, so Bonnie Tyler recorded it. Her version of "Hide Your Heart" was released in 1988 but didn't exactly set the rock world on fire.
Eventually, KISS did decide to record the song for their 1989 Hot In The Shade release and it did pretty well on the main steam rock charts, reaching number 22. While this wasn't one of the best charting songs by KISS it actually has always been a favorite of mine. Check out the video below. Do you guys remember this one? You HAVE to, right?

Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Robert Palmer 'I Didn't Mean to Turn You On'

I think when most people think of Robert Palmer they almost immediately picture his "Addicted to Love" video, with him looking suave as several cloned women pretend to play instruments behind him. It's a visual that, even 30 years after the release of his Riptide album, is still etched into pop culture's history. It's classic, timeless, and back then everyone absolutely loved Palmer. While I really liked "Addicted to Love", my favorite song off of the album is actually the single that followed it.
"I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" hit the charts in early 1986 and I loved it immediately. Instead of girls with slicked back hair, this video featured women that looked like they were runway ready and the song itself has always felt a bit tongue-in-cheek, especially with Palmer singing it. It fit his image back then and the extended dance mix can still crush a lot of other 12" tracks out there.
Ironically, Palmer wasn't the only one to record "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On". Cherrelle did it first and Mariah Carey had a version decades later, but it's Palmer's that is the best known of all.
