Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Stevie Nicks -'I Can't Wait'

"She wonders how many more hours
Her heart will feel broken
In secret she says she needs to see him
But no words are spoken
She dances around in a circle
Well she's got that feeling now
Blame it on something at first sight
Put the blame on me if you want to
To be continued
I can't wait... I can't wait"

I've always that that "I Can't Wait" is one of Stevie Nicks' better solo songs. It was the first single released from her third solo album back in 1985 and it did very well. It made it to number 20 on Billboard's Hot 100 and the video was n heavy rotation on MTV. Still, it seems to be lost beneath a bunch of other songs by Nicks and after I did a bit of digging I realized the reason why.

Stevie explained it herself in the liner notes of her 1991 compilation album, Timespace: The Best of Stevie Nicks.

"To understand this song, you sort of have to let yourself go a little crazy. Love is blind, it never works out, but you just have to have it. I think this was about the most exciting song that I had ever heard. My friend, Rick, whom I had known since I was 18 and he was 13, brought over this track with this incredible percussion thing, and gave it to me asking me if I would listen to it and consider writing a song for it. I listened to the song once, and pretended not to be that knocked out, but the second Rick left, I ran in my little recording studio and wrote 'I Can't Wait.' It took all night, and I think it is all about how electric I felt about this music. And that night, that SATURDAY night, Rick and I went into a BIG studio and recorded it. I sang it only once, and have never sung it since in the studio. Some vocals are magic and simply not able to beat. So I let go of it, as new to me as it was; but you know, now when I hear it on the radio, this incredible feeling comes over me, like something really incredible is about to happen.""

If you search on Youtube you'll see that she performed it a few times in 1986 but left it alone after that. I understand that rush that she mentions because I get it too whenever "I Can't Wait" comes on the radio. Check out the video below!

Daily Boom 90's Nostalgia: Garbage - 'Only Happy When It Rains'

I'm only happy when it rains
I feel good when things are going wrong
I only listen to the sad, sad songs
I'm only happy when it rains

I only smile in the dark
My only comfort is the night gone black
I didn't accidentally tell you that
I'm only happy when it rains

If you've been reading DailyBOOM for any real length of time then you already know that I absolutely love Garbage. I'll worship at the feet of Shirley Manson and praise the talent of the rest of the band each and every chance that I get. Finally getting to see them perform live last summer was absolutely everything that I had hoped for and more. It's always risky when you wait years to see a band that you love for the first time. Especially more than 20 years. You run the risk of voices fading, vocal range diminishing and fingers just not playing the way that they once did.

Not the case with Garbage. I can't imagine them ever sounding better than they currently do. And Shirley has certainly gotten better with some good years under her belt. The performance anxiety she once had has been traded in for a sense of authority and control as she stalks the stage.  There have been so many great tracks over the years but since it is currently pouring I'm going to make a fairly obvious choice.

Is "Only Happy When It Rains" their best song? Maybe. Is it their best song played live? Definitely maybe. It has always created or (embraced an already existing) mood. It described the 90's angst perfectly which is, I'm sure, why it became such a huge breakout (and breakthrough) hit for Garbage. I also think it has one of the best videos of the entire decade to accompany it.  Check it out below! Fabulous stiil, isn't it?

Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Vixen - 'Edge Of A Broken Heart'

"I can't believe I could've been so blind, but love is strange
I thought about it for a long long time, but the truth remains
I don't need another lonely night to dry my tears
The answer's plain as black and white, and I can see the picture very clear
I been living on the edge of a broken heart
I don't wanna fall, I don't wanna crawl
I been living on the edge of a broken heart
Don't you wonder why I gotta say goodbye."

When you think of women in rock one of the first groups that has to come to mind is Vixen.  They've sold over a million records and were battling the likes of Def Leppard at the height of the hair band craze in the late 80's.  The lineup changed a tiny bit but the most commercially successful variation of Vixen included Janet Gardner, lead vocals, guitar, Jan Kuehnemund, lead guitar and backing vocals, Share Pedersen, bass and backing vocals and Roxy Petrucci on drums.

The ladies have toured and broken up a few times over the years. Back in January of 2013 they had worked out all of their differences and were ready to announce a reunion plan when Keuhnemund was diagnosed with cancer. She fought hard until finally losing her battle in October of 2013. The remaining members of Vixen vowed to play on in her honor and they've done just that. While the group isn't in the midst of a rigorous tour, they do pop up at hard rock festivals and similar events so if you're a fan, keep your eyes open because you just might be able to catch the ladies rocking out.

Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Pat Benatar - 'Love Is A Battlefield'

"We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
You're begging me to go
Then making me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way
Or am I the best thing you've had
Believe me
Believe me
I can't tell you why
But I'm trapped by your love
And I'm chained to your side."

Pat Benatar is a female rock legend by probably just about anyone's standards, but believe it or not my favorite song by her features that nifty drum beat. Of course, I'm talking about "Love Is A Battlefield" (which is still fantastic to this day if you're lucky enough to hear it live). The 1983 hit is one of Benatar's best charting songs and it also earned her a fourth Grammy. The video also helped to put her into MTV's record books because it is the first one ever aired that featured a real storyline, with speaking parts.

Now the video is really well down but watching Benatar dance has always seemed a bit odd to me. But the song itself is really pretty fantastic. A great rock song with a beat that makes it hard to stay still and lyrically, well, we have all been there. Love is hard. Check out the classic video below!

Meet The Boom Radio Staff: Chris- The Host of My Rock & Roll Heaven

(Chris with Lee Aron)

Chris is the host of My Rock & Roll Heaven heard Sundays 5-7pm EST on Boom Radio!

Where do you live-
Markham, Ontario (part of the Greater Toronto Area)

Earliest musical memory-  listening to Beethoven’s 5th symphony with my dad’s giant headphones on (I have a pic somewhere!). I was probably 5 or so and I remember being absolutely blown away by how powerful the music was. My parents were big music lovers (especially classical) and we always had music playing in the house.

The first album you bought-
First album I bought with my own money was Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger. It was one of 13 records I got for a penny when I joined Columbia House for the 1st time in 1983, but it was the 1st one I circled on the flyer that came in the Saturday newspaper. Great thing is I still have the record. It’s pretty beat up, I played it non-stop! I remember having to get my mom to sign for me and that the grand total including shipping was $1.86.

First concert -
First concert was November 19th, 1988 in North Bay Ontario (where I grew up) and it was seeing my 1st favorite band, Honeymoon Suite! The venue was called the North Bay Arts Centre (it’s still there) and it’s about a 1,000 seat theatre with fantastic acoustics. I remember waiting in line before the box office opened (determined to get great seats), and ended up being one of the 1st people there! I managed to get 2nd row centre seats (4 in total) and rushed back to school afterwards to tell my buddies! Still have the ticket stub too.
Honeymoon Suite was fantastic, they were on the tour for their 3rd album Racing After Midnight and played a solid 2 hours. Great thing is that they are still together making new music and touring. I’ll be seeing them this summer J

Last concert attended-
Billy Idol and Steve Stevens, March 25 2019 at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. I have been a massive Billy Idol fan for years and this was my first time seeing him live! This show was simply Billy and Steve on stage, playing acoustic and electric versions of his classic songs, with Billy telling us the history behind his music and how the songs came to be. Almost like a VH1 Storytellers/MTV Unplugged type show. Seeing Billy and Steve in such a small venue (it was about a 1,000 seater) and hearing him tell the story of his life while singing these songs was such a memorable experience and one I won’t soon forget.

You just got off of a plane & are standing in your dream location, where are you? Hmmm…. Tough to narrow it down to just one location but right now I’d have to say the Maldives.

Favorite memory-
Wow, I have so many of them! I’ll go with a recent one though, which would be meeting my favorite band Def Leppard last summer. One of the best days of my life!

Bucket list goal-
Travelling through Europe for an entire summer going from one rock festival to another!

Finish this sentence- "This time next year I hopefully will have won the lottery and I’m retired sitting on a beach somewhere with the rock and roll cranked up! ;) "

You're hosting a dinner with 3 living artists & 3 that have died. Who will be there?
So many artists I would love to do this with!!! 3 living would be Joe Elliott, Nikki Sixx and Bryan Ferry. 3 that are no longer with us would be Freddie Mercury, Steve Clark and Bon Scott

Make sure you follow Chris on Twitter & Instagram for all kinds of rock content & daily posts. Here's a playlist of some of his favorite stuff!

Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Ozzy Osbourne And Lita Ford - 'Close My Eyes Forever'

"Baby
I get so scared inside, and I don't really understand
Is it love that's on my mind, or is it fantasy?
Heaven
Is in the palm of my hand, and it's waiting here for you
What am I supposed to do with a childhood tragedy?
If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain unchanged?
If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain the same?
Sometimes
It's hard to hold on
So hard to hold on to my dreams
It isn't always what it seems"

So many fantastic power ballads came out of the 80's but very few of them were duets. I think that by the time Ozzy Osbourne and Lita Ford released "Close My Eyes Forever" in 1988, we were more than ready for it. It was about as lyrically desperate and suicidal as it gets. The fact that these two wrote and recorded it smack in the middle of a night of partying is hardly a surprise either.

Supposedly Sharon Osbourne had left them together and Ozzy and Lita's creativity went through the roof after getting really high. They both had dropped their walls and the song just totally fell into place. It's funny because this was a real crossover song for them. Even if you weren't a fan of hair bands or hard rock, you still probably loved this song.

I think the best hard rock of the 80's ultimately ended up being the stuff that has never felt dated. "Close My Eyes Forever" is for sure one of those classics. Check out the video below. Do you think that this is Ozzy and Lita at their best?
