Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Suzanne Vega - 'Tom's Diner'

"I am sitting in the morning
At the diner on the corner
I am waiting at the counter
For the man to pour the coffee
And he fills it only halfway
And before I even argue
He is looking out the window
At somebody coming in"

It's amazing the difference that remixing a song can make. One of the very best examples of a remix completely breathing life into a song has to be "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega. It was originally written back in 1981 as a much more folksy tune. It was eventually released on her 1987 album Solitude Standing, which was a huge hit. The song at that point, not so much.

The diner that it referred to was actually Tom's Restaurant on the corner of 112th St. and Broadway in NYC. It was a place that she frequented often and it later became the mockup restaurant that Seinfeld imitated. In late 1989 the British group DNA decided to give "Tom's Diner" a beat and the rest was pop history. A fantastic remix was born. You remember it I'm sure.

"Do-do-dodo-do-da-dodo..."
