"But say a prayer and pray for the other ones
At Christmas time, it's hard but while you're having fun
There's a world outside your window, and it's a world of dread and fear
Where a kiss of love can kill you, and there's death in every tear
And the Christmas bells that ring there are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight we're reaching out and touching you"
Back in 1984 a food shortage in Ethiopia lead a group of artists to band together to create a Christmas song that would ultimately raise money to help. Bob Geldof and Midge Ure wrote "Do They Know It's Christmas" and then recruited some of the biggest names in the music industry at the time to perform under the group name Band Aid. While the song never cracked the top ten on Billboard's U.S. charts it still is probably one of the most familiar modern Christmas songs around. It also has been re-recorded over the years with the proceeds always going to benefit a current cause.
