Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Martika - 'Toy Soldiers'

"It's getting hard to wake up in the morning

My head is spinning constantly

How can it be?
How could I be so blind to this addiction?
If I don't stop, the next one's gonna be me

Only emptiness remains

It replaces all, all the pain"

Sometimes a song seems to arrive at just the right point in time. When Martinka's "Toy Soldiers" was released it seemed to find success literally overnight. While the song was originally written to address drugs and their devastating impact on a close friend, it didn't only strike a chord in that way. The lyrics remind you how fragile we all are and it was and still is relatable to each and every one of us.

The late 80's were loaded down with female ballads and so if you were going to release one then you really needed to bring something unique to the table. "Toy Soldiers" did just that and it really helped Martika to stand out from the Debbie Gibson's and the Tiffany's that seemed to rule the charts. Check it out below!
