Daily Boom 80's Throwback: The Jets- 'Cross My Broken Heart'

Image result for The Jets music group

"Cross my broken heart, boy
Swear, I'll never part from you
I want you to be mine
I know you think I'm not
Your picture-perfect jewel
And let us break apart
When everything was cool
I needed to explore
And open up the door
But now I need you more"

Today we're going back in time to the summer of 1987. Beverly Hills Cop 2 had just blasted into theaters and while it may not have been as fantastic as the original, it did serve up a great soundtrack. The Jets, a family band out of Minnesota had already had a string of hits when they brought us "Cross My Broken Heart". It was the first single off of their second album and did really well, reaching number seven on Billboard's Hot 100.

More importantly, the song got tons of radio play and was a really big dance hit. While the Wolfgramm family eventually became best known for some of their ballads (like "Make It Real"), songs like "Cross My Broken Heart" were really a lot of fun and still get plenty of play on satellite radio. As for The Jets, they are still performing together and you can often catch them out there as part of the Freestyle Explosion tour.

Daily Boom 90's Nostalgia: Queen - 'The Show Must Go On'

Empty spaces, what are we living for
Abandoned places, I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore
The show must go on

"The Show Must Go On" is probably one of my most favorite songs by Queen. It was recorded in 1990 at the height of Freddie Mercury's battle with full-blown AIDS and there was concern that he wouldn't be able tp actually hit the necessary high notes. While the rest of the band may have thought that he was too weak to actually perform it Mercury knew better and pulled off the tough vocals in spite of his fading health. The song itself is filled with innuendo about Mercury's health and how change was pretty imminent.

The press had speculated that the legendary frontman was ill but no confirmation of Mercury's HIV-positive status was ever given until the day before his death in 1991. "The Show Must Go On" was also released in 1991 and the video that accompanies it features the band performing together at various gigs over the years. Check out the late, great Freddie Mercury and the rest of Queen below.

Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Olivia Newton John - 'Twist Of Fate'

It's gotta be a strange twist of fate
Telling me that Heaven can wait
Telling me to get it right this time
Life doesn't mean a thing
Without the love you bring
Love is what we've found
The second time around

Do you remember when Olivia Newton John and John Travolta teamed up onscreen a second time and the result was nothing like the critical acclaim that Grease received?  The film, Two Of A Kind was released in late 1983 and while everyone loved Newton John and Travolta together years earlier, this movie bombed pretty badly. Critics and fans alike weren't buying the far-fetched plot line of 4 angels persuading God not to wipe out the planet earth in favor of a do-over. Even Newton John and Travolta couldn't save this one.

What was good from Two Of A Kind is the soundtrack. "Twist Of Fate" was the first single off of it and it helped Newton John's hot streak to continue. It was a top 5 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 and it quickly became the most memorable part of Two Of A Kind. Check out the video below. This was when Newton John was still working hard to escape her good-girl image.

Daily Boom 80's Throwback: Kool & The Gang - 'Joanna'

"I'm in love, and I won't lie
She's my girl and always on my mind
She gives me her love and a feeling that's right
Never lets me down, especially at night

So, I'm gonna do the best I can
To please that girl and be her only man, see
She cheers me up when I feel alone
And that's why baby I've got to let you know

Joanna, I love you
You're the one, the one for me, my baby."

Unlike everyone else around me, I was never really a fan of Kool & The Gang's "Celebration". I know it was kind of dubbed the ultimate party song- for obvious reasons- but I never liked it much. But when they rolled out "Joanna" a few years later, I was completely sold. I remember being at my grandmother's on a Saturday afternoon watching videos and seeing this one for the first time. Joanna supposedly was an older woman who owned a diner, but flashbacks to her youth showed her being a dancer at The Cotton Club in Harlem.

It was a love song really and the string of hits by Kool & The Gang that followed ("Tonight", "Fresh", "Misled") ended up being dance classics that I love to this day. Check out the video for "Joanna" below!
